When an acreage pond sits still, it stratifies into warm surface water over a cold, oxygen-starved bottom. That is where the green water, muck and odour start.
Green water and algae
Warm, still surface water feeds algae and floating scum, so the pond looks murky and green instead of clear and inviting.
Muck and rotten-egg smell
With no oxygen at the bottom the water turns anaerobic, muck builds up and it starts to release the rotten-egg smell of hydrogen sulphide gas.
No power at the pond
Acreage and recreational ponds often sit well away from the house, so plug-in aeration is impractical and running a power line is costly.
