How to Prevent Winter Fish Kill: Keep a Hole Open in Pond Ice

Winter fish kill happens when a pond seals over with ice and snow, oxygen in the water gets used up, and trapped gases have no way to escape. The fix is to keep a hole open in the ice with winter aeration, so oxygen keeps entering the water and gases can leave. You do not need to keep the whole pond open, just a consistent opening.

Why fish die under the ice

Once ice and snow cover a pond, sunlight and surface exchange are cut off. Decomposing matter on the bottom keeps consuming oxygen, and with no way to replenish it, oxygen levels fall until fish cannot survive. Keeping an opening restores that exchange.
