For a pond up to about 1 acre and 25 ft deep, a single diaphragm windmill (or a comparable solar or electric aerator) is a sound starting point. Beyond 1 acre, you step up to a double diaphragm windmill or a higher-flow electric unit. The exact answer comes from three inputs: your surface area in acres, your depth, and whether you have power.

Why depth and shape matter

Deeper ponds hold more water per acre, and long or irregular ponds may need an extra diffuser to reach every corner. When a pond sits on the edge between two sizes, size up rather than down.
